He did a couple of warm up runs on his own bike but then on the way to the starting line the chain fell off twice, so he opted to race with one of the school's bikes
And they're off! Check out that smile . . . he had no idea what was coming :)
They had quite the loop to complete, getting off their bikes multiple times to carry them over the hurtles.
About 75% of the track was off road, they had to go up a little hill for part of it and carry their bikes up stairs . . .
They had to complete the whole track 4 times. I don't know the distance but I would bet it was close to 4 miles they completed when it was all said and done! Here he is rolling into the finish line. He was BEAT!!!! Afterward he swore he would "Never do that EVER again!"

He didn't even want to stay for the awards he just wanted to "Go home RIGHT NOW!" We had a little pow wow about finishing what he started and supporting his team members and friends, but you can bet the second they were done he hopped on his bike and was gone! The rest of the kids and I walked home alone.
The next day was parent teacher conference and his teacher congratulated him for doing the race. She mentioned a boys club the school is starting Wednesday's and Friday's for 5th and 6th grade boys. Pretty much like and early morning workout class for the boys. When she asked if that might be something he would be interested in he looked at her like "Yeah right!" But later on that day started talking about it like he was looking forward to it. I guess we will see?
He likes to be active but on his terms. He definitely doesn't like to push himself. I am hoping that if he keeps being involved in these type of things he will someday enjoy it?!
I told him how proud I was of him for finishing such a challenging coarse. He never gave up and pushed through to the end even though he was SO tired. We talked about how blessed he is to have such a wonderful body that can do those amazing things, we talked about how beautiful the weather was during the race and how fun it was to be there with a lot of his friends. If there was a cyclocross again this weekend, I don't think he would do it . . .well maybe he would?
